Nekoite with Merwinite
specimen number:
2354061
location:
Wet Weather Quarry, Sky Blue Hill, Crestmore quarries, Riverside Co., California, USA
description: The Wet Weather Quarry, situated on Sky Blue Hill within the world-famous Crestmore quarries complex in Riverside County, California, is celebrated for its exceptional contact metamorphic mineralogy. Formed where igneous intrusions intruded pure Paleozoic limestone, the site features high-temperature skarn and contact metamorphism that created a remarkably diverse assemblage of calcium silicate minerals. Commercial quarrying for limestone and cement raw materials began at Crestmore in the early twentieth century, and the Wet Weather Quarry was expanded significantly from the 1940s through the mid-1950s. During this active mining era, the exposure of clear intrusive relationships and distinct mineral zones made the quarry a premier locality for mineral collectors and geologists, who sourced iconic specimens of blue calcite, wollastonite, vesuvianite, crestmoreite, and rare calcium silicate phases.
White acicular micro crystals of nekoite covering most of the top of greenish merwinite matrix. Excellent example for both species. The specimen comes with several previous labels as shown in the video, excellent Eric Laskowski collection.
