Quartz
specimen number:
2062857
location:
Goboboseb Mts, Brandberg, Daures, Erongo, Namibia
description: The Goboboseb Mountains near Brandberg in the Erongo region of Namibia are characterized by extensive flood basalt formations dating back to the breakup of Gondwana, featuring gas cavities where high-quality quartz crystals developed. While the protected Brandberg massif itself remains legally off-limits due to its sacred heritage and thousands of ancient rock paintings, small-scale artisanal miners have targeted the surrounding Goboboseb volcanic pockets for decades to extract world-renowned specimens. The local amethyst, globally marketed under the Brandberg name, is highly prized by collectors for its exceptional clarity, complex internal phantoms, and striking color zoning that frequently blends purple amethyst with smoky and clear quartz variants.
A beautiful glassy gem purple crystal grouping of quartz set on matrix. This is sharply formed and in great condition all around. This is the variety of the species known as amethyst. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
