Quartz
specimen number:
2062821
location:
Crystal Park, Beaverhead Co., Montana, USA
description: Crystal Park in Beaverhead County, Montana, is situated within the Pioneer Mountains on a granitic batholith formed millions of years ago. Weathering of the bedrock produced deep deposits of decomposed granite sand, or grus, which host pockets of free-growing quartz crystals. Mining and collecting history here dates back generations, evolving from early prospecting to its current status as a popular public recreational site managed for rockhounds. Visitors frequently screen the soil to find clear, smoky, and amethyst varieties. Among these finds are scepter quartz specimens, which form when a later-stage crystal growth caps the end of an earlier, larger crystal to create a distinctive scepter shape.
Classic for this Montana locality, a smoky purple glassy gem scepter quartz crystal without matrix. In great condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous collection label from Ray DeMark.
