A grouping of light purple gemmy and lustrous double terminated crystals of quartz with little attached matrix. This is the variety often called amethyst. In very good condition all around. The specimen comes with several previous labels, these from the collection of Ray DeMark and from the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum at Michigan Tech University.

Statesville, located in Iredell County, North Carolina, was established in 1789 and incorporated in 1841, serving as a vital regional hub that grew steadily through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Geologically, the area sits primarily within the Piedmont physiographic province on the Battleground Formation, which consists of ancient metamorphic mica schist formed roughly 1000 to 540 million years ago. Local quartz veins cutting through this crystalline basement and surrounding granitic gneiss host mineral deposits, most notably yielding pockets of purple quartz and amethyst crystals weathered into the surrounding clay soils.
