specimen number:
8911085
location:
Jachymov, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
description: Jachymov, situated in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, is a world-famous historical mining district situated within the Ore Mountains. The region features a complex hydrothermal vein system formed within metamorphic schists and Hercynian granites during the Variscan orogeny. Mining in Jachymov dates back to the early sixteenth century, when rich silver deposits triggered a major rush and inspired the minting of Joachimsthalers, the historical precursor to the modern dollar. Later centuries brought significant mining for cobalt, nickel, bismuth, and uranium, establishing the locality as a cornerstone of European economic and geological history. Pyrargyrite, an important silver sulfosalt mineral locally known as ruby silver, was recovered from the rich silver-bearing veins of the district. Classic specimens of Jachymov pyrargyrite are highly prized by collectors for their intense dark red internal reflections, sharp metallic luster, and historic significance as premier examples of Old World mineralogy.
Sparkling deep red crystals of pyrargyrite measuring to 0.1 cm in size scattered across the front of this matrix. In good condition with very minimal micro-damage present. The specimen comes with a previous label from the Alton collection.
