Pyrargyrite
specimen number:
8911048
location:
San Guillermo vein, Proano Mine, Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico
description: Located within the historic Fresnillo mining district in Zacatecas, Mexico, the San Guillermo vein of the famous Proano Mine cuts through Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and volcaniclastic sequences affected by epithermal mineralization events. Formed by low-sulfidization hydrothermal fluids circulating through fault structures, this rich metallic vein system is world-renowned for its silver ore production. Mining in Fresnillo dates back to the sixteenth century, with modern underground operations at Proano uncovering some of the finest silver sulfosalt specimens ever recorded. Collectors and museums heavily prize the San Guillermo vein for yielding exceptional, sharp crystals of dark red to silver-gray pyrargyrite, often sitting on matrix alongside quartz and calcite, making it a legendary locality for classic Mexican silver minerals.
Superb large sharp bright lustrous crystal of pyrargyrite. Several smaller crystals attached on one side. Very minimal attached matrix, this is in super condition all around.
