specimen number:

location:
Langban, Filipstad, Varmland Co., Sweden
description: Langban, located near Filipstad in Varmland County, Sweden, is a world-renowned mining district with a complex geological history featuring carbonate-hosted iron and manganese ore bodies embedded in dolomitic marble and metamorphosed volcanic rocks. Mining operations there began around the sixteenth century and continued until 1972, turning the area into one of the most mineral-rich sites on Earth with hundreds of documented species. Among its many rare discoveries is pinakiolite, a striking black, submetallic, platy mineral that was first identified at this classic type locality.
Black platy pinakiolite on matrix. Nice example for this rare mineral. The specimen comes with several previous labels, one from the collection of Ray DeMark and the other from the collection of Knut Larsen.
