Perovskite
specimen number:
2063487
location:
Gardiner Complex, Kangerlussuaq Fjord, Sermersooq, Greenland
description: Located within the remote region of Kangerlussuaq Fjord in eastern Greenland, the Gardiner Complex is a Palaeogene alkaline ultramafic intrusion formed during regional rifting and volcanic activity associated with the North Atlantic breakup. Emplaced roughly 54 million years ago, the complex consists primarily of melilitolite, pyroxenite, and carbonatite units that underwent intense alkali metasomatism. While commercial mining has not occurred due to its extremely isolated Arctic setting and rugged terrain, the complex is well known to mineralogists and specialized field researchers for hosting an exceptionally diverse assemblage of rare-earth and unusual silicate minerals discovered during scientific expeditions beginning in the late twentieth century.
Fine grouping of lustrous black perovskite crystals, the largest almost 1.0 cm in size. No real matrix, in great condition.
