Perovskite with Magnetite
specimen number:
2063320
location:
Rocca Sella, Rubiana, Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, Italy
description: Rising prominently in the Susa Valley of Piedmont, Italy, Rocca Sella is a well known Alpine peak featuring metamorphic and rodingitic rock formations that crosscut serpentinite bodies. While not a major commercial mining site, the area has long attracted dedicated mineral collectors due to its Alpine fissures and rodingite dykes. These geological structures yield exceptional specimens of dark brown to black pseudo-cubic perovskite crystals, often associated with magnetite and chlorite, making Rocca Sella one of Italy's classic and most celebrated localities for this mineral.
Brown lustrous crystals of perovskite measuring to 0.6 cm in size on matrix with semi lustrous black magnetite. Magnetite crystals measure to 1.0 cm. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark who acquired the piece in 1980.
Size: 7.0 x 5.0 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
Collection: Ray DeMark
