Pectolite
specimen number:

location:
Laurel Hill, Secaucus, Hudson Co., New Jersey, USA
description: Laurel Hill, historically known as Snake Hill, is a prominent intrusive rock formation composed of dense diabase that pushed upward through surrounding sedimentary layers roughly 200 million years ago, sharing a common magmatic origin with the nearby Palisades Sill. For over a century, the site served as a major industrial trap-rock quarry supplying construction materials for regional urban growth, as well as a location housing various county institutions. Mineralogically, the quarry operations and associated veins made it a renowned collecting locality for diverse specimens, ultimately serving as the type locality for rare mineral species. Today, following decades of heavy commercial excavation and roadway construction that significantly reduced its original mass, the remaining portion of the formation is preserved as Laurel Hill County Park.
A cluster of tight compact lustrous radiating white pectolite crystals on matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
