Prospect Park Quarry, Passaic Co., New Jersey, USA
description: Located in Passaic County, New Jersey, the Prospect Park Quarry (also known historically as Sowerbutt Quarry or Warren Brothers Quarry) is situated within the Orange Mountain Basalt of the Watchung Mountains. The site consists of Jurassic-age basaltic lava flows containing abundant gas cavities and fractures filled with secondary mineral deposits. Mining operations began in 1901 to extract crushed stone and trap rock aggregate for construction, continuing for over a century until quarry operations ceased around 2010. Throughout its operational history, the quarry became world-famous among mineral collectors for yielding world-class, museum-quality specimens of zeolites and associated secondary minerals, including fine examples of prehnite, datolite, pectolite, calcite, quartz, and amethyst.
Nice combination piece from this old famous locality. Sprays of white radiating crystals of pectolite are scattered across the top of this matrix with light green semi lustrous translucent crystal groupings of prehnite to 1.1 cm in diameter. Small glassy crystals of datolite are scattered throughout. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 8.5 x 7.0 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
