Olivenite
specimen number:
2341107
location:
Tazalaght Copper Mine, Tazalaght, Taroudant, Souss-Massa, Morocco
description: The Tazalaght Copper Mine, situated within the Anti-Atlas region of southern Morocco, is characterized by rugged Proterozoic basement rocks and overlying Lower Cambrian sedimentary sequences, where copper mineralization occurs primarily as interwoven sulfide-bearing quartz-carbonate veins filling fractures along tectonic fold hinges and calcareous host rock. Historically exploited for metal extraction since ancient periods, the underground workings and surrounding district have more recently attracted mineral collectors and geologists targeting rich copper assemblages, secondary oxide minerals, and structural vein specimens associated with the region's prominent metallogenic belt.
The top of this matrix is mostly covered with glistening deep olive green needlelike crystals of olivenite to 0.2 cm in size. In great condition. Superb example for the species and locality. From 2018. The specimen with a previous label from the collection of Jan Erik Larsen.
