Sacaramb, Certeju de Sus, Hunedoara Co., Romania
description: Located in the famous Golden Quadrilateral region of the Apuseni Mountains in Hunedoara County, Romania, Sacaramb (historically Nagyag) near Certeju de Sus is world-renowned for its complex epithermal vein system formed by Neogene volcanic activity. Modern mining operations began in the mid-18th century after rich gold and tellurium ore bodies were discovered, quickly establishing Sacaramb as one of the most prolific and scientifically important gold-producing centers in Europe. The district serves as the type locality for nagyagite, a rare gold-lead sulfosalt telluride mineral first described from these mines in 1845. Highly prized by historic and contemporary collectors, nagyagite specimens from Sacaramb typically feature lustrous, dark gray to black metallic foil-like or bladed crystals embedded in a quartz or carbonate matrix.
From the type locality for the species, metallic masses of nagyagite rich throughout matrix. The specimen comes with a previous collection label that states this was collected in 1938. This is shown at the end of the video.
