Millerite
specimen number:
2062877
location:
Thompson Mine, Moab-Setting Lakes, Manitoba, Canada
description: The Thompson Mine, situated within the Moak-Setting Lakes region of the Thompson Nickel Belt in northern Manitoba, Canada, lies within a Paleoproterozoic orogenic belt where nickel deposits are hosted within deformed metasedimentary and ultramafic rocks. Following intensive exploration and airborne geophysical surveys that located hidden ore bodies beneath extensive muskeg, the major discovery was made in 1956, leading to rapid underground and open-pit development that established a thriving mining community. The local deposits are renowned among mineral collectors for producing exceptional specimen material, including stunning brassy-brown, acicular crystals and radiating tufts of fibrous millerite.
Excellent example for the species, a thick botryoidal like coating of crystallized metallic brassy-brown millerite covering the top of matrix. This is in good condition and very choice for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 9.0 x 6.0 x 2.5 cm (small-cabinet)
