Millerite
specimen number:
2354269
location:
Wissen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
description: The Wissen area in the Siegerland ore district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, features complex hydrothermal vein systems hosted within Devonian-aged sedimentary rocks, heavily shaped by historic base metal and iron mining dating back centuries. Within these historic underground workings, notably mines like the Friedrich Mine near Wissen, exceptional mineral specimens were discovered in cavities and vugs. The locality became world-famous among mineral collectors for yielding some of the finest, most robust acicular crystal formations of millerite known, displaying brassy, hair-like or capillary crystal tufts that remain prized collector items today.
Fine old German classic with golden to silver needlelike crystals of millerite measuring to 0.4 cm in size mostly covering aesthetically a thin matrix. In very good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jack Nieburger.
