Miargyrite
specimen number:
2354123
location:
San Genaro Mine, Santa Ana, Castrovirreyna, Huancavelica, Peru
description: The San Genaro Mine, located in the Castrovirreyna District of Huancavelica, Peru, is an ancient silver-lead-zinc deposit situated within high-altitude hydrothermal vein systems of the Andes Mountains. Mining activity in the region dates back to the Spanish colonial era, with modern underground operations extracting rich polymetallic ores trapped inside volcanic host rocks. Hydrothermal vein mineralizing events produced an exceptional array of complex sulfosalt species, making the site famous among mineralogists and serious collectors for world-class mineral specimens. Among these notable species is miargyrite, a rare silver antimony sulfide mineral that forms striking, dark steel-gray to iron-black tabular crystals with a brilliant metallic luster and reddish internal reflections. Deep underground workings at San Genaro produced some of the finest matrix examples of miargyrite known to science, highly prized in private and museum collections worldwide.
An excellent miniature for the species, metallic semi lustrous crystallized groupings made up of tiny miargyrite crystals measuring to 2.0 cm across standing up with nice relief from matrix. This is in good condition.
