Linarite
specimen number:
2063593
location:
Grand Reef Mine, Graham Co., Arizona, USA
description: Located in the Aravaipa Mining District of Graham County, Arizona, the Grand Reef Mine is a historic underground deposit formed within fault zones cutting through volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Initially worked for base metals like lead and silver during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the mine gained enduring fame among mineral collectors for its exceptional secondary copper and lead oxidation assemblages. The hydrothermal veins host striking crystal specimens, most notably deep azure-blue linarite, which occurs alongside other rare minerals such as brochantite and wulfenite. Although commercial metal production has long since ceased, the locality remains celebrated worldwide by mineralogists and specimen collectors for yielding some of the finest aesthetic crystals of linarite ever discovered.
A deep blue lustrous grouping of slightly translucent linarite crystals 0.5 x 0.4 x 0.1 cm in size embedded on matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He collected the piece in December, 1981.
Size: 5.5 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
