Hubnerite with Quartz
specimen number:
2062664
location:
Huayllapon Mine, Pasto Bueno, Pampas, Pallasca, Ancash, Peru
description: The Huayllapon Mine is a prominent underground working within the Pasto Bueno district of the high Peruvian Andes in Ancash, Peru. Geologically, the deposit sits within a high-temperature hydrothermal vein system related to a quartz monzonite intrusive mass at the northern end of the Cordillera Blanca. Mineralization is characterized by steeply dipping quartz veins cutting through sedimentary host rocks, forming a zoned deposit rich in tungsten minerals alongside base metal sulfides and carbonates. Historically, commercial interest and modern development in the district began in the early twentieth century, with formal mining and milling operations ramping up significantly by mid-century. Over the decades, the area became world-renowned both as a major historic producer of critical industrial metals and as a legendary locality for high-grade mineral specimens.
Classic grouping of lustrous terminated sharp crystals of hubnerite, this associated with small needlelike crystals of sparkling quartz. No matrix, this is complete all around and in excellent condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark and dates to the 1980s.
Size: 4.5 x 2.3 x 1.4 cm (miniature)
