Heulandite
specimen number:
2063504
location:
Amudikha River, Nizhnyaya Tunguska River Basin, Evenkiysky, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia
description: Located in the remote Siberian region within the Nizhnyaya Tunguska River basin of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, the Amudikha River area features extensive basaltic rock formations. These volcanic layers contain cavities created by ancient hydrothermal activity, which host an exceptional suite of secondary minerals. Among them, attractive crystals of heulandite occur alongside other zeolites within the altered basalt. Due to the extremely rugged and isolated terrain, systematic commercial mining has not taken place, but collecting is carried out occasionally by specialized mineral expeditions and regional field researchers who recover fine specimen material from these remote outcrops.
A mostly loose cluster of large thick lustrous colorless heulandite crystals. Some matrix attached along the left side and lower portion of the crystal grouping. This is in good condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. His label notes that he acquired this via exchange from the Seaman Museum in Michigan in 1994.
Size: 6.0 x 5.5 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
