Heulandite
specimen number:
2063503
location:
Ashland, Jackson Co., Oregon, USA
description: Situated in Jackson County, Oregon, the Ashland area rests within the rugged geological framework of the Klamath Mountains, characterized by ancient metamorphic and granitic intrusive rocks. Mining history here ignited during the mid-nineteenth century gold rush with the discovery of rich placer deposits at Forty-nine Diggings, followed by lode mining operations like the prominent Ashland Mine targeting gold-bearing quartz veins. The region's complex thermal and hydrothermal activity also created environments favorable for secondary mineral formation. Among these is heulandite, a hydrous silicate mineral belonging to the zeolite group, which occurs as distinct, translucent crystals lining cavities and fractures within the local altered volcanic and intrusive formations, making it a notable find for regional mineral collectors.
Excellent for the species and locality, a pearly lustrous grouping of coffin shape opaque very lustrous heulandite crystals 2.5 cm in size across the front of matrix. The crystals are aesthetically arranged and in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Charles Trantham.
