Hematite
specimen number:
2063689
location:
Thomas Range, Juab Co., Utah, USA
description: A fine loose crystal grouping of thin platy brilliantly lustrous metallic hematite crystals. Sharply formed, this is complete all around and in really fine condition. A choice thumbnail for the species and locality. The Thomas Range in Juab County, Utah, features Tertiary-age rhyolite flows characterized by numerous gas cavities that formed roughly six to seven million years ago, creating a world-renowned mineral collecting area discovered in the early twentieth century. Rockhounds and mineral collectors have long targeted these volcanic rocks for rare specimens such as topaz, bixbyite, and red beryl. Within these same lithophysal cavities, the iron oxide mineral hematite frequently occurs as brilliant metallic micro-crystals, thin specular blades, or reddish dustings coating the walls and accompanying crystals, adding striking contrast and color to local mineral specimens.
