Grossular

specimen number:
2354285

location:
Diako, Kayes, Mali

description:
A glassy sharply formed loose floater crystal of grossular, this yellow green in color with slight translucency. In excellent condition all around.

The Diako locality in the Kayes Region of Mali is situated within a geological environment dominated by Precambrian to Paleozoic sedimentary strata that were intruded by Mesozoic igneous rocks, creating ideal conditions for contact metamorphism and skarn formation. Hydrothermal fluids rich in calcium, aluminum, and silica altered carbonate-rich country rocks, driving the growth of high-quality grossular garnet crystals in skarn zones and hydrothermal cavities. Mineral collecting and artisanal mining in the area expanded in the late 1990s and early 2000s as local miners recognized the commercial value of Mali garnets, carefully extracting specimens by hand from exposed quartz and skarn veins. Diako grossular garnets are celebrated by collectors for their lustrous, well-formed dodecahedral and trapezohedral crystals, displaying vibrant color tones ranging from honey-yellow and amber to olive-green and deep reddish-brown.
