location:
North Baldy Mountain, Socorro Co., New Mexico, USA
description: North Baldy Mountain, situated in the Magdalena Mountains of Socorro County, New Mexico, features complex Tertiary volcanic geology characterized by faulted ash-flow tuffs, andesites, and rhyolitic dikes. Hydrothermal activity associated with faulting led to localized quartz veins and breccia zones containing sparse precious metal mineralization, including gold and silver. Prospectors explored the steep terrain around North Baldy and nearby canyons during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, establishing small workings like the North Baldy mine, though gold production remained minimal compared to surrounding mining districts. Today, the area is predominantly recognized for its rugged scenic trail networks and mountain recreation rather than commercial mineral extraction.
A fairly rich area of delicate twinned native gold crystals, this 1.0 x 0.8 cm across, set up on a quartz rich matrix. In great condition. This is a very neat locality gold specimen. The specimen comes with one previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He acquired the specimen through the New Mexico Bureau of Mines Museum, they obtained this from the widow of Transito Diaz who was a miner in the area during the 1940s and 1950s.
