Goethite with Calcite, Pyrite
specimen number:
9302412
location:
George W. MacLeod mine, McMurray, Algoma, Ontario, Canada
description: Located in McMurray Township within the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt near Wawa, Algoma District, Ontario, the George W. MacLeod Mine is hosted within Precambrian Neoarchean iron formation deposits. The local geology is dominated by extensive stratiform siderite-bearing iron range rocks folded and fractured alongside volcanic and sedimentary units. Underground production at the George W. MacLeod Mine began in 1960 under the operation of Algoma Ore Properties to supply siderite ore to a local sintering plant that enriched the iron content for steel production in Sault Ste. Marie. Before closing in 1998 due to economic shifts, the site operated as a major iron producer and became famous among mineral collectors for fine mineral specimens, including sharp siderite crystals, pyrite, marcasite, and distinctive quartz variations extracted during mining operations.
Botryoidal somewhat chatoyant crystallized goethite aesthetically covering the top of a mostly massive pyrite matrix with small scalenohedral crystals of colorless calcite. In good condition. Excellent for the species and locality.
