Goethite
specimen number:
2351048
location:
Newport Mine, Ironwood, Gogebic Co., Michigan, USA
description: Located on the Gogebic Iron Range in Ironwood, Gogebic County, Michigan, the Newport Mine was situated within Paleoproterozoic iron-formations, primarily harvesting high-grade hematite deposits trapped against intrusive basaltic dikes. Originally established as the Iron King Mine in 1884 or 1886, it was renamed the Newport Mine and developed into one of the largest underground iron producers in the region, operating for over six decades down to depths exceeding 3,000 feet. Mine operations yielded tens of millions of tons of soft red hematite ore until operations ceased in the mid-twentieth century. Today, mineral collectors and historians remember the site for its rich mining heritage and specimens of goethite, manganite, and botryoidal hematite, though the original surface shafts and headframes have since been dismantled.
The top of this matrix is covered with lustrous botryoidal crystalline goethite. Nice for this historic locality. In good condition.
