description: A neat crystallized stalactite of galena. This is made up of small sparkling crystals, this is terminated and in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the Alton collection, noting previously that the piece was part of the collection of David Glenn. The geology of the Creede mining district in Mineral County, Colorado, is anchored by the collapse of the Oligocene-age Creede Caldera, formed through major volcanic activity and extensive ash-flow tuffs roughly 25 to 26 million years ago. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through major fault fractures deposited rich epithermal vein systems loaded with silver, lead, zinc, and copper minerals. Following Nicholas Creede's discovery of the Holy Moses claim in 1889, the region erupted into one of Colorado's last great nineteenth-century silver mining booms, establishing legendary camps along massive structures like the Amethyst Vein. Miners and mineral collectors prized the district for its rich production of native silver alongside fine specimens of galena, sphalerite, barite, and cerussite.
