Fluorite with Quartz
specimen number:
2063659
location:
Rock Candy mine, Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada
description: The Rock Candy mine, located near Grand Forks in southern British Columbia, Canada, is a famous historic mineral locality situated within an area shaped by complex Tertiary volcanic and tectonic activity. Discovered around 1918 by a local prospector, the deposit was initially developed and mined by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company as a major source of fluorite flux for lead and zinc smelting operations in nearby Trail. Industrial operations eventually ceased in the 1920s, but the locality gained lasting fame among mineral collectors for its exceptional crystal specimens, including bright green to yellow-green fluorite, clear quartz, barite, and yellow-green pyromorphite. In later years, the mine site was operated as a fee-mining destination, allowing collectors to dig through dump material to find fine, lustrous mineral clusters before access became restricted.
Light green octahedral crystals of fluorite measuring to almost 3.0 cm in size across the top of matrix. These are completely coated with sparkling colorless small crystals of quartz. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 7.5 x 5.0 x 2.5 cm (small-cabinet)
