Fluorite with Quartz
specimen number:
8911125
location:
Deer Trail Mine, Piute Co., Utah, USA
description: Attractive light green mostly gemmy crystals of fluorite to 1.5 cm in size covering most of one side of this quartz rich matrix. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with two previous labels, one from the Alton collection and the other noting the collection of Betty Kalaskie. Collected in the 1980s. Situated in the Tushar Mountains within the Mount Baldy Mining District of Piute County, the Deer Trail Mine features complex geology characterized by elongated, strata-bound ore bodies that formed through replacement processes within Paleozoic carbonate rock layers. Discovered in 1878, the underground mine developed into a principal regional producer of silver, lead, and zinc, alongside secondary values of copper and gold. Hydrothermal solutions driven by nearby igneous intrusions deposited rich sulfide mineral suites along favorable bedding planes and fault zones. While historically operated as a significant commercial underground metal producer with extensive adits and shafts, the site has also attracted mineral collectors and modern exploration companies interested in its diverse metallic ores, gangue minerals like fluorite, and secondary sulfate specimens.
