Fluorite with Dolomite
specimen number:
2062658
location:
Sturgeon Bay quarry, Door Co., Wisconsin, USA
description: The stone quarries of Sturgeon Bay in Door County, Wisconsin, were developed in the late 19th century to produce crushed stone and riprap for harbor breakwaters across the Great Lakes. Geologically, the region features Silurian-age dolomite bedrock containing small cavities called vugs. Within these vugs, collectors have found cubic fluorite crystals in shades ranging from clear to yellow or brown, often associated with calcite. Under shortwave and longwave ultraviolet light, these fluorite specimens exhibit vibrant fluorescence, typically glowing yellow or blue-white, and can also demonstrate phosphorescence.
Light brown color zoned translucent lustrous cubic crystals of fluorite to 1.0 cm in size on matrix with sparkling smaller white crystals of dolomite. This is in very good condition. Unusual locality example for the species, this is vividly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.8 x 3.2 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
