Fluorite with Calcite
specimen number:
2062972
location:
Pint's Quarry, Raymond, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, USA
description: The Pint's Quarry in Raymond, Iowa, is situated in middle Devonian carbonate host rock. Historically operated for commercial limestone aggregate extraction, the quarry gained widespread renown among mineral collectors and museums for its exceptional cavity fillings and fracture zones. It became especially famous for producing remarkable specimens of fluorite, often associated with crystallized calcite, pyrite, and marcasite. Active commercial operations eventually ceased, and portions of the quarry have since filled with water, transitioning from an active industrial and collecting site into a submerged landmark.
A deep amber to almost brown lustrous slightly translucent cubic crystal of fluorite 1.0 cm in size on one hand of an open pocket lined with small colorless scalenohedral crystals of calcite. In good condition. Quite nice for the species at this locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. Brightly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light.
Size: 4.8 x 3.2 x 3.0 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
