Fluorite on Sphalerite
specimen number:
2062667
location:
Caldwell Stone Co. Quarry, Boyle Co., Kentucky, USA
description: The Caldwell Stone Company Quarry, located near Danville in Boyle County, Kentucky, has operated for more than 90 years as a major local producer of crushed stone and aggregate. Geologically, the quarry mines the rich deposits of the Lexington Limestone, an Ordovician-age formation laid down roughly 450 million years ago when the region was covered by shallow, warm seas. The site is well known among geologists and mineral collectors for its distinct vugs and mineral veins running through the rock, which have yielded notable specimens of calcite, barite, and fluorite.
Almost colorless gemmy lustrous cubic crystals of fluorite to 0.3 cm in size thickly scattered across the top of a lustrous sphalerite crystal matrix. In good condition. Nice locality example. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm (miniature)
