Fluorite
specimen number:
2063043
location:
Portales area, Blanchard Mine, Socorro Co., New Mexico, USA
description: The geology of the Portales area at the Blanchard Mine within the Hansonburg mining district of Socorro County features mineralized fault and fracture zones hosted in Pennsylvanian-age sedimentary rocks, where hydrothermal solutions deposited various economic minerals. Historically, the site saw intermittent underground extraction targeting metal ores starting in the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. Today, the locality is world famous among mineral collectors and rockhounds for yielding exceptionally vibrant crystals, particularly brilliant blue fluorite and associated specimen minerals.
Beautiful glass gem color zoned bluish purple crystals of fluorite to 1.0 cm in size perched nicely up on matrix. The luster on these as much better than normally seen from this mining district for the species. In great condition. The specimen was collected by Ray DeMark in July, 2013 from a cut across and south of the ore bin.
Size: 4.5 x 3.0 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
