Fluorite
specimen number:
2062969
location:
Stoneco Auglaize Quarry, Junction, Paulding Co., Ohio, USA
description: The Stoneco Auglaize Quarry in Junction, Paulding County, Ohio, operates within Paleozoic limestone and dolostone formations of the Michigan Basin, serving as a renowned midwestern collecting site for exceptional mineral specimens discovered during commercial aggregate mining operations. Collectors prize the cavity-lining specimens from this locality, particularly the distinct multi-generational fluorite, which features early brown or golden cubes overlaid by later transparent purple cubes, alongside well-formed calcite crystals. The striking iridescence observed on the surface of some fluorite crystals is caused by thin-film interference resulting from a microscopically thin hydrocarbon or petroleum coating.
A large open pocket across the front of this matrix lined with small beautifully iridescent brown lustrous crystals of fluorite, these averaging 0.3 cm in size. In good condition. The specimen comes with two previous labels, one from the collection of Ray DeMark and the other from the collection of John Medici.
