Fluorite
specimen number:
2062927
location:
Poggio Balate, Termini Imerese, Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, Italy
description: Poggio Balate, situated near Termini Imerese within the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, features a geological framework shaped by low temperature hydrothermal fluids circulating through Mesozoic limestone and carbonate host rocks. Rather than being a large industrial mining district, the locality's collecting history began in the early 1970s when field researchers first identified mineralized zones along the slopes of the San Calogero massif. It is internationally renowned among mineral collectors for its distinctive blue fluorite. The specimens typically occur as sharp, well formed cubic crystals displaying striking color zoning that shifts between deep cobalt blue in daylight and blue green under indoor lighting, often accompanied by delicate baryte rosettes.
Lustrous blue highly translucent cubic crystals of fluorite measuring to 1.5 cm on edge set attractively on matrix. This is in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.5 x 5.0 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
