The Summit group, also known historically with the Poe Mines in the Cookes Peak Mining District of Luna County, New Mexico, saw active mining exploration and intermittent production beginning in the late 19th century around 1880, scaling down significantly by the mid-20th century with major operations largely ceasing around 1943. Geologically, the region is characterized by a complex mix of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic formations, where Paleozoic carbonate rocks such as limestone and dolostone are intruded by Tertiary igneous rocks. Mineralization typically occurs as replacement deposits and along fault zones, yielding notable concentrations of lead, zinc, silver, and copper ores.
