Fluorite with Barite
specimen number:
2063314
location:
Berbes, Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain
description: Located in the Ribadesella municipality of Asturias, Spain, the Berbes mining area is famous for its Mississippi Valley-type fluorite deposits hosted within Paleozoic limestone and marl formations. Active commercial extraction began in the mid-twentieth century, primarily producing industrial fluorite, before major operations ceased in the late 1980s. Berbes became world-renowned among mineral collectors for yielding magnificent, gemmy blue and violet fluorite crystals, often associated with barite and quartz, making it one of Europe's most iconic collector localities.
An attractive Spanish classic, gem quality glassy very pale violet to almost colorless cubic crystals of fluorite measuring to 3.2 cm on edge set perfectly up on a white bladed barite crystal matrix. Naturally crystallized all around, this is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
