Fluorapophyllite-K with Stilbite, Heulandite
specimen number:
2063272
location:
Pashan Quarry, Pune, Maharashtra, India
description: Located in the Deccan Traps of Maharashtra, India, the Pashan Quarry complex consists of basalt excavations originally opened for road construction and building materials. Geologically, these tholeiitic basalt lava flows feature gas-trapped vesicles and cavities that allowed secondary hydrothermal mineralization to occur millions of years after the volcanic eruptions. Beginning in the 1970s, the locality achieved international acclaim among mineral collectors following the discovery of spectacular, deep emerald-green vanadian apophyllite crystals along with lustrous sprays of mesolite, stilbite, and heulandite. Dedicated specimen mining operated in selected quarries at Pashan for roughly two decades, supplying museums and private collections worldwide before urban development and quarry closures largely halted active collecting.
Beautiful green prismatic gemmy and lustrous crystals of fluorapophyllite to 1.5 cm in height coming off of a matrix of crystallized stilbite and heulandite. This is in great condition. The color and luster are great. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark and dates to the very early 1980s.
Size: 6.5 x 4.0 x 1.5 cm (small-cabinet)
