Fluorapophyllite-K
specimen number:
2062746
location:
Junnar, Pune, Maharashtra, India
description: Junnar, located in the Pune district of Maharashtra within the Deccan Traps region, is characterized by a thick sequence of horizontal Cretaceous-Eocene flood basalt flows. While the area does not feature traditional metal ore mining, commercial and amateur quarrying of the basalt rocks for construction aggregate frequently exposes hollow cavities and vesicles. Historically gaining global scientific and collector attention during infrastructure and railway expansion projects in the region, these basalt quarries reveal rich secondary mineral deposits. Groundwater percolating through the porous volcanic layers over millions of years deposited silica and mineral-rich solutions, forming spectacular geodes filled with diverse zeolites such as stilbite, heulandite, scolecite, and mesolite, often accompanied by sparkling quartz and green apophyllite.
A loose floater perfect crystal of fluorapophyllite. This is lustrous and slightly translucent. Crystallized completely all around with no points of attachment. In super condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
