The Palabora Mine is a major copper and by-product mining operation located near Phalaborwa in the Mopani district of Limpopo Province, South Africa, situated adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Operating since the mid-twentieth century, the site initially functioned as a massive open-pit excavation before transitioning to underground block-cave mining methods to access deep ore reserves. The extraction complex is historically notable for exploiting a unique alkaline and carbonatite intrusive geological structure, yielding significant quantities of refined copper alongside valuable commodities such as magnetite and vermiculite.
