Epidote
specimen number:
2063406
location:
Harts Range, Northern Territory, Australia
description: Situated in the Northern Territory of Australia, the Harts Range region consists of deeply metamorphosed Precambrian rocks within the Arunta Block that have undergone extensive regional deformation and fluid movement. Epidote occurs primarily within metamorphic schists, amphibolites, and retrograded shear zones where hydrothermal fluids altered pre-existing calcium-aluminum silicates. Historically famous for 19th-century mica mining and garnet extraction, the Harts Range evolved into a world-renowned destination for lapidary enthusiasts and mineral collectors during the mid-20th century. Localities such as the Spotted Tiger area are particularly celebrated for producing sharp, lustrous dark green to brownish-green epidote crystals, often associated with quartz and feldspar in crystalline cavities.
A lustrous loose deep green sharp crystal of epidote. Naturally crystallized all around, this is in good condition. Tiny crystals of quartz are present as well. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 3.2 x 1.9 x 1.5 cm (miniature)
