Epidote
specimen number:
2062655
location:
Calumet Mine, Chaffee Co., Colorado, USA
description: The Calumet Mine, located in Chaffee County, Colorado, was discovered around 1880 and operated primarily as a major iron ore producer for the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company until the close of the nineteenth century. The site is well known historically for utilizing a steep narrow-gauge railroad spur that transported raw material down to regional processing lines. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within complex metamorphic and intrusive rock units on Calumet Mountain, where mineralized bands formed parallel to local bedding planes. The area features contact metamorphic rock formations containing various metallic ores and accessory silicate minerals, making it a notable location for both historical mining activity and mineral collecting.
A deep green lustrous terminated crystal of epidote 1.5 cm in size on matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous collection label from Ray DeMark. He collected the specimen personally in 1957.
