Dravite
specimen number:
2063646
location:
Vargem Alegre, Espirito Santo, Brazil
description: The Vargem Alegre district in Espirito Santo, Brazil, is situated within the broader Atlantic Mobile Belt, a region characterized by extensive Neoproterozoic granite-pegmatite intrusions cut through complex metamorphic basement rocks. Magmatic fluids enriched in boron, magnesium, and aluminum penetrated these pegmatite veins and host rocks, allowing for the hydrothermal crystallization of tourmaline group minerals. Local artisanal miners, traditionally operating small-scale diggings and garimpos, have long prospected these pegmatite fields to extract gem-quality minerals and fine specimens for the global market. Dravite specimens from Vargem Alegre are renowned among collectors for producing well-formed, highly lustrous, dark brown to brownish-black hexagonal tourmaline crystals, often occurring on matrix alongside quartz and feldspar.
Sharp lustrous black double terminated crystal of dravite, this with some muscovite attached. In great condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 3.3 x 3.0 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
