Dravite
specimen number:
2063643
location:
Yinniethara, Western Australia, Australia
description: The Yinniethara region in Western Australia is renowned for its complex Precambrian pegmatites and metamorphic rocks that hosted intense hydrothermal activity. Geologically, interactions between boron-rich fluids and magnesium-bearing country rocks led to the formation of exceptional metamorphism and metasomatic zones. Small-scale mining and mineral collecting in the remote area surged during the mid-twentieth century as prospectors uncovered rich deposits along dry creeks and granite outcrops. Yinniethara achieved international acclaim among collectors for producing some of the world's finest dravite specimens, characterized by remarkably sharp, lustrous, dark brown to black tourmaline crystals. These well-formed, doubly terminated hexagonal crystals often occur embedded in contrasting pale mica matrix, making them iconic collector pieces from Australia.
A lustrous brown complete crystal grouping of dravite with little attached matrix. Classic for the species and locality. In good condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
