Dolomite on Calcite
specimen number:
9892151
location:
Corydon Crushed Stone Co. Quarry, Harrison Co., Indiana, USA
description: The Corydon Crushed Stone Company Quarry in Harrison County, Indiana, exposes Middle to Upper Mississippian carbonate strata within the Blue River Group, including the Saint Louis, Ste. Genevieve, and Paoli Limestones. Dissolution along fractures and paleokarst features in these massive limestone beds led to the formation of rich carbonate-vug systems and open cavities. First established as an active crushed limestone operation in the mid twentieth century, the quarry gained classic status among regional specimen collectors from the late 1960s onward. It became renowned for yielding exceptional mineral specimens, featuring lustrous scalenohedral calcite crystals, saddle-shaped clusters of pale pink dolomite, and purple fluorite.
A mostly cleavage white calcite matrix, this hosting pale pink curved rhombohedral crystals of dolomite to 1.3 cm in size. Classic for the locality. In good condition.
