Calcite with Dolomite
specimen number:
2063166
location:
Corydon Crushed Stone Co. Quarry, Harrison Co., Indiana, USA
description: The Corydon Crushed Stone Co. Quarry, located northwest of Corydon in Harrison County, Indiana, operates within Mississippian-age carbonate strata, primarily extracting limestone from formations such as the Saint Louis, Ste. Genevieve, and Paoli Limestones. Operating since the mid-twentieth century, the active commercial stone quarry has become widely recognized by mineral collectors for vugs and pockets containing exceptional specimens of pink dolomite, distinct calcite crystals, fluorite, and barite. While active commercial mining continues to supply aggregate materials to the region, the site is generally closed to outside mineral collecting.
Pale yellowish lustrous translucent stacked rhombohedral crystal groupings of calcite to 3.0 cm in height coming off matrix with little light pink crystallized dolomite. In good condition, classic material for this Indiana locality. Collected by Bill Mackenzie. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.0 x 6.0 x 3.3 cm (small-cabinet)
