Devilline with Brochantite, Cyanotrichite
specimen number:
2063048
location:
Grandview Mine, Coconino Co., Arizona, USA
description: The Grandview Mine, situated on Horseshoe Mesa deep within the Grand Canyon in Coconino County, Arizona, features mineralization hosted within breccia pipes and sedimentary rock layers that produced rich deposits of copper ores and rare secondary mineral species. Prospector Pete Berry established the site as the Last Chance Mine in the late nineteenth century, building the steep Grandview Trail so that trains of mules could haul high-grade ore up to the canyon rim. Although operations thrived briefly and won exhibition awards, high transport costs and fluctuating market prices led to the closure of mining activities. The property later passed through various owners, including newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, before the National Park Service acquired it in 1940. Mineral collecting at the site ended with its incorporation into the national park, and the historic workings are now strictly preserved for their cultural heritage and as a protected habitat for resident bat populations.
The top of this matrix is mostly covered with attractive green micro crystals of brochantite, dark blue tufts of cyanotrichite crystals, and lighter blue acicular crystallized devilline. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.0 x 3.5 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
