Aurichalcite
specimen number:
2063440
location:
Grandview Mine, Coconino Co., Arizona, USA
description: Located in the Grand Canyon within Coconino County, Arizona, the Grandview Mine (originally developed as the Last Chance Mine in 1890) operated historically as a high-grade copper mine before becoming part of Grand Canyon National Park. Geologically, the deposit consists of supergene secondary copper and zinc minerals formed by the weathering and oxidation of primary sulfides within Breccia Pipe structures and Paleozoic limestone formations. The site is famous among mineral collectors for producing magnificent specimens of aurichalcite, which typically occur as delicate, sky-blue to turquoise-colored acicular needle-like crystals and fibrous crusts lining small cavity pockets. Today, mineral collecting at the historical site is strictly prohibited due to its location within national park land.
Beautiful sky-blue acicular crystals of aurichalcite very rich across the top of this matrix. In great condition. A very choice well crystallized small cabinet sized example for the species and locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 8.5 x 7.5 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
