Corundum
specimen number:
2063468
location:
Khit Ostrov, Loukhsky, Karelia, Russia
description: Located in the remote Loukhsky District of the Republic of Karelia, Russia, Khit Ostrov is renowned for its unique metamorphic geology hosting exceptional gem-quality corundum specimens. The regional geology consists of ancient metamorphic complexes where high-temperature metasomatic processes transformed local rocks, producing distinctive lenses containing well-formed, tabular to prismatic crystals of ruby embedded within tough gneiss and mica matrices. While state geological surveys and prospecting teams initially investigated the area for industrial minerals and rare elements during the Soviet era, mineral collectors later targeted the deposit for its striking purple-red ruby specimens. Because the host rock is extremely hard and resistant, collecting at the remote island site has historically involved grueling manual labor, requiring collectors to break through stubborn matrix rock with hand tools to extract undamaged crystals.
Classic Russian locality for corundum, this the variety known as Ruby. A double terminated purplish red lustrous crystal measuring 1.5 x 0.8 x 0.8 cm in size is embedded up on matrix. In great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
