Mogok, located in Mandalay State, Myanmar, is a historic gem-mining region whose continuous operations began around 1217 CE (traditionally founded by Shan hunters) and continue through the present day under a mix of local, commercial, and artisanal control rather than having a fixed closing date. Geologically, the area is centered on the Mogok Metamorphic Belt, which was shaped by the India-Asia tectonic convergence. The region consists predominantly of high-grade metamorphic rocks, notably calcite-dolomite marbles formed during the Eocene to Oligocene epochs, alongside intrusive granites and syenites. These unique, iron-poor carbonate environments created ideal high-temperature conditions for crystallizing world-famous gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, and spinels.
