Cobaltite
specimen number:
9892171
location:
Hakansboda, Strassa, Lindesberg, Orebro Co., Sweden
description: Located in the historic Bergslagen ore province of Orebro County, Sweden, the Hakansboda deposit in the Strassa and Lindesberg area formed within Palaeoproterozoic supracrustal rocks where skarn and hydrothermal mineralization created rich copper and cobalt ores. Mining at Hakansboda originated as early as the 1400s for copper, with its primary development occurring from 1702 through 1873 as an important Swedish source of cobalt. Today, Hakansboda is world-famous among mineral collectors for producing some of the finest known crystal specimens of cobaltite, characterized by extraordinarily sharp, lustrous, silver-gray cubic and pyritohedral crystals embedded in chalcopyrite or pyrrhotite matrix.
Classic specimen from Sweden, a lustrous metallic silver sharply formed crystal of cobaltite 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.9 cm in size along one edge of this massive chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite matrix. In very good condition.
